When the people who serve us food can’t afford to pay the rent or take a day off when they’re sick, our dining experience suffers. The newly released ROC National Diners’ Guide 2012 provides information on the wage, benefits, and promotion practices of the 150 most popular restaurants in America. The Guide lists responsible restaurants where you can eat knowing that your server can afford to pay the rent and your cook isn’t working while sick.”

Seems simple enough. But if it’s true, it could be the answer to a problem computer scientists have wrestled for decades.
Vinay Deolalikar, who is with Hewlett-Packard Labs, has sent to peers copies of a proof he did stating that P is not equal to NP. “

The Status of the P Versus NP Problem | September 2009 | Communications of the ACM – “The theory of NP-completeness helps us understand these limitations and the P versus NP problem begins to loom large not just as an interesting theoretical question in computer science, but as a basic principle that permeates all the sciences.”

A compendium of NP optimization problems – “This is a continuously updated catalog of approximability results for NP optimization problems. What’s more, they found that those previous results turned out to have an almost contradictory double life, providing methods for breaking a wide class of cryptosystems.”

We start with one of those nutritious, delicious recipes from Marian Burross. Mark Bitman announced that he was stopping his Minimalist column for the NY Times. All three are delicious to read, to consider, and to dream about.

Before we left for our trip to Puerto Rico, I copied this list of places to eat at the Atlanta Airport. The list was extracted from “Grabbing a Bite Between Flights,” by Matt Gross for the NY Times

Since we flew to PR on Christmas Day we thought we’d try One Flew South for our Christmas dinner. We enjoyed it so much that we also ate there during our layover in Atlanta, that’s what you get when you go for the cheap tickets, on our way back. The service and food was excellent. It is a bit up-scale and more pricey than most restaurant food, but it was worth it. We shared an arugula, butternut squash salad, and salmon ‘hot-pot’ style. We had one beer, one coffee and the cheeses plate for dessert on the way out and the rice pudding on the way back. The bill, with 18% gratuity included was about $50.00. Very much worth it, and if the restaurant were in Fredericksburg, we’d be regulars.
ATLANTA: ATL

We’ve used this recipe many times. The resuts are good , good for you, and easy to prepare. We always use fresh rosemary rather than dried beecuase we have had rosemary growing out of our front door for many years.

The recipe comes from Herbs Health & Cookery, by Clyde Loewenfeld & Philippa Black, 1970 ( We bought it then for 95 cents.)

Ingredients:

1 Tablespoon Melted Butter

1 teaspoon crumbled dry rosemary or 1 Tablespoon fresh rosemary

1/2 teaspoon salt

1/4 teaspoon paprika

1 cup walnut halves

Method:

Mix together the melted butter, rosemary, salt, and paprika with the walnuts.

Pour into a shallow pan, spreading the nuts in a single layer.

Roast until richly brown in a moderate oven (350), shaking occasionally, for about 10 or 15 minutes.

Serve hot, as an appetizer. May be reheated.

I grew up listening to The Jesus and Mary Chain, Slowdive, and My Bloody Valentine. That is what really inspired me to play guitar. All of their sounds and textures made their songs so mysterious. There was this beautiful feeling of not knowing exactly what was going on. You were just hanging on to a song with no instruments. It left everything up to the imagination.

How did you get into making pedals?
Just trying to create sounds that I couldn’t get in other places. I failed miserably for years and then kindda figured out how to make things work. And then I started the company because I wanted to go to Europe for a month as a vacation, but I didn’t really have any money, and I had this idea for a pedal that no one else had ever come out with before, and I just kind of marketed that real quick and I made enough money to go. Total Sonic Annihilation. The flagship of Death by Audio.

If A Place to Bury Strangers were one of the presidential candidates, the hypnotic trio would be John McCain. Politics and a namesake hinting at the Maverick’s imminent resting place aside, like the Straight Talk Express, this Brooklynite band tends to noisily echo the past more than strut into the future.

We ended the meal with a creme brulee flavored with lime juice and ginger, and red bean ice cream.
