The first two links deal with open access to information. The first is a presented as a parable that tells of an inventor who has a great idea and develops it into a product. However, the truckers, the ones who control the distribution lines will not agree to distribute it unless the inventor signs over all the intellectual property rights to the invention. it is the situation many researchers face when they wish to publish their findings in an academic journal. The second is a link to the Creative Commons site that deals specifically with education, ccLearn.
The last link is to Keven Kelley’s book about the network economy. I’ve read parts of it, and referred to it while developing some ideas about using non-text resources from the Web.

A short, interesting book that is a related series of essays about the relationship between Unix or Linux with a way to understand a computer. This is overlayed with a discussion of the superiority of Unix/Linux to the major windowed operating systems, OsX and Windows.
A particularly interesting and thought provoking essay is titled “Metaphor Shear.” It takes into the realm of philosophy in terms of dealing with the metaphor a windows system presents to us, and how we have learned to live with it, even to depend on it.
The book finishes with a parable of an operating system that would allow us to create a universe and thus make all the choices in our lives. What if the interface were developed so that all our choices were represented by radio buttons or check boxes? Suppose a problem develops and you call customer support?

“If you get a flack on the line, he or she would tell you that your life was actually fine, that there was not a thing wrong with it, and in any event it would be a lot better after the next upgrade rolled out. But if you persisted, and identified yourself as advanced, you might get through to an actual engineer.”
“What would the engineer say, after you had explained your problem and enumerated all the dissatisfactions in your life? He would probably tell you that life is a very hard and complicated thing; that no interface can change that; that anyone who believes otherwise is a sucker; and that if you don’t like having choices made for you, you should start making your own.”

Duality is the prominent theme. The split we have in our personalities, Jekyll and Hyde, romance and science.

Rather than go on explaining the book, here is a quote from about 3/4 way through:
” In the fossil record of our existence, there is no trace of love. You cannot find it held in the earth’s crust, waiting to be discovered. The long bones of our ancestors show nothing of their hearts. Their last meal is sometimes preserved in peat or in ice, but their thoughts and feelings are gone.

Darwin overturned a stable-state system of creation and completion. His new world was flux, change, trial and error, maverick shifts, chance, fateful experiments and lottery odds against success. But earth has turned out to be the blue ball with the winning number. Bobbing alone in a sea of space, earth was the lucky number.”

I love reading Paul Auster, following his stories as they go in and out of fantasy and reality. In “Man in the Dark: A Novel“, the man creates a story in which he is bewildered, loved, and final destroyed as he tries to reconcile two realities, and his own fate. His own life whose events have taken him to a place where he doesn’t quite fit and can’t really help the ones he loves. As usual, Auster provides excellent work for us to experience and enjoy.

This is a “Thea Kozak Mystery”, and like her other works like the others traces the thoughts and actions of a protagonist who appears in several of Flora’s novels in a series. Thea Kozak isn’t a private detective or police officer, but is a member of a consulting firm that works with private schools in New England that are facing a crisis. In this case the school’s headmaster wants to expel a student who he claims has been a problem. The student claims she is being stalked. A murder is committed along the way, Thea is physically threatened and attacked, and the plot twists through a backdrop of deception, hatred, and violence. Still, it is written in a way that keeps you involved wanting to know how the story is revealed.

I’ve read several of her books since this one, and have others on my dresser to get to next. I am glad to have found her stories. Building them in a series based on a main character, such as Thea Kozak, allows Kate Flora to keep the reader involved in a story that spans several works, and the experience is enhanced if you’ve read several of the books in a series.
