{"id":136,"date":"2004-07-11T00:20:09","date_gmt":"2004-07-11T04:20:09","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/cherrycoated.com\/wordpress\/?p=136"},"modified":"2004-07-11T00:20:09","modified_gmt":"2004-07-11T04:20:09","slug":"internet-surveillance","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.webliminal.com\/webliminalblog\/interesting-web-sites\/internet-surveillance","title":{"rendered":"Internet Surveillance"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I started reading the report <a href=\"http:\/\/www.rsf.org\/rubrique.php3?id_rubrique=433\">The Internet Under Surveillance 2004<\/a> from <a href=\"http:\/\/www.rdf.org\">Reporters Without Borders<\/a>, and thought that the topic, Internet Surveillance would be a good one to use in lectures and class activities in my course <a href=\"http:\/\/people.umw.edu\/~ernie\/cpsc104\">The Internet: Technology, Information, and Issues<\/a> this fall.<\/p>\n<p>In some related searching I was lead to a few other reports.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/papers.ssrn.com\/sol3\/papers.cfm?abstract_id=317501\">Internet Surveillance Law After the USA Patriot Act: The Big Brother That Isn&#8217;t<\/a> &#8221; This article argues that the common wisdom on the USA Patriot Act is wrong. Far from being a significant expansion of law enforcement powers online, the Patriot Act actually changed Internet surveillance law in only minor ways and added several key privacy protections&#8221;<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.theregister.co.uk\/2004\/04\/06\/fbi_wiretap_bonanza\/\">Milking the Internet surveillance cash cow<\/a> &#8220;Pundits and policy-makers are arguing over the legal implications of the FBI&#8217;s recent petition to the FCC (http:\/\/www.cdt.org\/digi_tele\/20040310fbipetition.pdf) about how to implement the Communications Assistance for Law Enforcement Act. But the Bureau&#8217;s push to get broadband providers covered under CALEA, which currently applies only to telecom carriers, stands to benefit more than just government spies: a domestic eavesdropping industry stands waiting to sell Internet wiretapping tools and services to cable and DSL companies.&#8221;<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.edsb.ch\/e\/themen\/internet\/index.htm\"> Internet and e-mail surveillance at the workplace<\/a> &#8221; In Switzerland, large numbers of employees have access to the Internet and e-mail from their workplace &#8211; essentially for professional reasons, but sometimes for private use also.
