To<br \/>\nmake your communication most effective you need to<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>write clearly,<\/li>\n<li>take into account that people will likely be reading your message on a computer<br \/>\nscreen, and<\/li>\n<li>take full advantage of the medium itself.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Here are some guidelines for effective Internet communication using text:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Be careful about spelling and punctuation. Follow the same rules you&#8217;d use<br \/>\nif you were writing a letter or a memo.<\/li>\n<li>If you want to state something strongly, surround it with asterisks (*)<br \/>\nor write it in uppercase, but don&#8217;t take this too far. Some folks equate items<br \/>\nin uppercase letters with shouting.<\/li>\n<li>Emoticons or smileys were developed to express facial expressions or gestures<br \/>\nas part of text-based communication. &#8220;Dr. Internut&#8217;s Clinic&#8221; has<br \/>\npages that <a href=\"http:\/\/www.onlinenetiquette.com\/email_acronyms.html\">describe<br \/>\nacronyms<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.onlinenetiquette.com\/email_emoticons.html\">emoticons<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>Use a subject header or tag that gets the reader&#8217;s attention and accurately<br \/>\ncharacterizes what&#8217;s in the message.<\/li>\n<li>Make your message as short as possible, but don&#8217;t make it cryptic or unclear.<br \/>\nMost users have to deal with limits on the amount of information they can<br \/>\nreceive. Keep the body of the message succinct. If you&#8217;re using email or posting<br \/>\na message to a discussion group or Usenet, limit the message to one or two<br \/>\nscreens. In some cases-such as using chat-you need to capture someone&#8217;s attention<br \/>\nquickly, and you may be limited to the amount of text you can send in one<br \/>\nmessage.<\/li>\n<li>Write relatively short paragraphs and limit lines to 75 characters. Some<br \/>\nof the programs you use for email or Usenet wrap long lines at whatever the<br \/>\nwindow margin is set. Others don&#8217;t do that. Give your reader a break and wrap<br \/>\nthe lines for them.<\/li>\n<li>Include parts&#8211; but not all-of an original message when you are writing<br \/>\na reply. Include only the portions pertinent to your reply. You do this to<br \/>\nset a context for your message.
