Oliver Ackermann has what could best be described as a dry sense of humour. In fact, the singer and guitarist for Brooklyn-based noise-rockers A Place to Bury Strangers is so deadpan that it can be hard to tell when he’s kidding and when he’s not.

There’s a risk of gimmickry with any kind of excessive noise, but Exploding Head is full of great tracks that recall the aforementioned bands, The Cure, Cocteau Twins and other great ’80s acts. It’s definitely one of the year’s best.

“Indeed, on this the accessible guitars soar brightly above unrelenting drums and Oliver Ackermann’s standout vocal performance of the album for a fine closer.”
