Sobering titles in Scientific American

I was checking the RSS feed I get from Scientific American and came across some titles of some disturbing articles.

  1. The North Pole is Melting “The permanent Arctic ice cap dwindled to a record low this week, presaging a future of a summertime Northwest Passage and obscuring fog.” … [2030] “It’s going to be a different world,” Serreze notes. “The observed rates of change have far outstripped what we projected.”
  2. China’s Cyber Attacks Signal New Battlefield Is Online.“The uproar over claims that the People’s Republic of China launched a series of network-based cyber attacks earlier this month against the U.K., France, Germany, and the U.S. has died down. But few expect China to back off efforts to gain the upper hand in the battle of bits and bytes. China’s own stated military goals include improving the country’s ability to wage information warfare.”
  3. World’s Top 10 Most Polluted Places “Russia, China and India contain the most areas where toxic pollution and human habitation collide with devastating effects.” All this: drasticaly shortened life expectancies, brain damage, and birth defectslives, for the sake of cheaper manufacturing.

A Place to Bury Strangers – recent publicity

A Place to Bury Strangers has received a lot of well-deserved complementary publicity lately.

It started on August 31, 2007 with the piece in Pitchfork reviewing their first album “A Place to Bury Strangers.”

The Village Voice published a piece last night “A Place to Bury Strangers: Effects-Pedal Memory Games,” that seems from here to put the band more into the main stream.

You can buy the album at Brainwashed, and they’ve put together a good compendium of the talk on the Net.
