Today was really warm with a brief sprinkling in the morning. A beautiful sunny day followed. Here are a few pics from the front garden.

A close up of some of the lilacs that “jumped” from a neighbor’s yard to ours.
Another shot of the lilacs. They are beautiful and at their prime. I wish you could smell these.
Some of the fennel that’s springing up, self-seeding from last year. Just as they look here, they are very green and beautiful fronds. Great in a salad or with cooked foods.

It rained! Some rain Friday and all day Saturday.

A view from our bedroom window. The subtle colors of spring as the trees begin to leaf out.
Another view from the same window, but looking down to the wheelbarrow that’s catching the water and all the leaves we still have to rake.

Some simple pics of what’s going on in the front garden. Maybe this will be the beginning of a garden journal blog – a garjoug? a garjog?

maple leaves
The leaves on the red maple as they are just starting to unfold. We got this tree as a tiny stick from our good friend Genine Lentine.
pineaplesage leaves<
A pic of the emerging leaves of a pineapple sage plant. The plant is common enough, but it’s not so common for one to winter over here. We’ve been buying them and planting them for several years, but this is only the second time one has survived the winter outdoors.
daffodils
Finally, the great harbinger of spring – daffodils! Severl of our daffodils are finished by now, but this one, the variety long forgotten, is doing very nicely.

Tape Shows Bush Warned About Katrina

Our friends at moveon.org sent out email this morning to be sure the story that’s appeared in the AP (Tape: Bush, Chertoff Warned Before Katrina, the Washington Post (Video Shows Bush Being Warned on Katrina), and others isn’t lost in the shuffle.

“At the August 28th briefing, the president was told exactly what to expect:

* The chief scientist of the National Hurricane Center warned that a major levee breach was “obviously a very, very grave concern.” Bush lied to the entire nation about this point just 5 days later.
* Michael Brown told the president that if New Orleans flooded the Superdome emergency shelter would likely be under water and short on supplies, creating a “catastrophe within a catastrophe.”
* Experts and officials implored the President to prepare for, as the AP described it, “devastation of historic proportions.”

President Bush didn’t ask a single question during the briefing. In the next two days he campaigned, attended birthday parties and played guitar while the worst natural disaster in American history killed over 1,300 people and displaced hundreds of thousands.”

Google’s Response to U.S. Request for Data

MercuryNews.com | 02/17/2006 | Google rips Bush administration’s search request

By Elise Ackerman (no relation)

Some quotes:
“Google called the Bush administration’s request for data on Web searches as “so uninformed as to be nonsensical” in papers filed in San Jose federal court Friday, arguing that turning over the information would expose its trade secrets and violate the privacy of its users.”

“While the government did not ask Google for information relating to the identity of its users, Google said people sometimes search for their social security numbers or for their credit card numbers or other personal data.”
