Agglomeration of Food Links – Early February 2011

pears, on the table at home, falmouth, VAEach of these links comes from the New York Times. We start with one of those nutritious, delicious recipes from Marian Burross. Mark Bitman announced that he was stopping his Minimalist column for the NY Times. The upside of that was a list of his 25 favorite columns with hyperlinks to each. He also published a ‘Food Manifesto’ to bring forward some issues regarding food. All three are delicious to read, to consider, and to dream about.

An Agglomeration: How to Study & Wikipedia Turns 10!

ld building ont he way to Warsaw, VA
Putting this together as two links I gathered on January 18, 2011, it seems that these have little to do with each other. The first si a link to a site that I occasionally point out to my students. it has some good advice, good arguments, and the occasional cartoon to make the case for effective, serious study. The second is about the tenth anniversary of Wikipedia, and the focus is on how Wikipedia is a useful tool for students. These do seem related after all.

  • “ am going to give you some suggestions on how to study efficiently. They worked for me when I was in high school, college, and graduate school. Not only that, but they worked equally well for me in humanities courses (like philosophy and literature) and in science courses (like math and computer science). But, given that everyone’s learning style is different, some of my suggestions may not work for you, at least not without some individual modifications. Nevertheless, I urge you to try them. Most successful students use them (or some slight variation of them).”
  • “As Wikipedia hits its 10th year of operation, it is making efforts to involve academics more closely in its process. The latest is a new plan to build an “open educational resource platform” that will gather tools about teaching with Wikipedia in the classroom”
