Brief review: The Forgiven by Lawrence Osborne

The Forgiven: A Novel by Lawrence Osborne.

Life changing events sometimes need forgiveness.

If you experience a life-changing event, do you need to be forgiven? Are you responsible?
Osborne gives such a full and rich description of an opulent 3-day weekend party in Morocco, you can feel the heat. You’re irritated by the sand. He describes the poverty of the native inhabitants and their resourcefulness.

An exciting and pleasurable read. “She sat on the wall listening to the waterwheels in the forgetful sunshine, baking and content. To make the lizards scatter she kicked her sandals against the pale green cushion-like prickly pears. It was perfectly silent. The air smelled of cedars. The mountains shone, paradoxically, like ice, a brown, sullied ice that shines all the same. When the wind picked up the tassels of her dress and the hat’s ribbon, she felt herself fluttering all in one piece, with the coils of lemons brushing her tongue and a whiff of thyme.”

Brief review: Walks With Men by Ann Beattie

Walks With Men by Ann Beattie. Novella. Interesting, but some parts seem undeveloped which is sometimes characteristic of a novella. That is understandable, but, still I felt like I was left in a situation that needed more explanation in  order for me to make sense of it.

Tree Peony BloomSeveral years ago we saw a spectacular display of blooming tree  peonies at Brooklyn Botanic Gardens. The next year we bought one tree peony for our garden in the rear of the house and the following year bought another. They don’t bloom a profusely as the plants a Brooklyn Botanic Gardens, but each bloom is wonderful.

Obituary average age. October 30, 2014: 76.92

Ice on Chesapeake BayThe average age of those listed in the thirteen obituaries in the October 30, 2014 Free Lance-Star was 76.92. The median was 81.5 with a sample standard deviation of 16.43. The ages ranged from 28 to 94.

This is the eleventh day I’ve been collecting this data.
The mean of  obituary average ages  using {77.375,64,74.143, 62.5, 55,66.8333, 74.11,71.27,68.82, 76.92} at Wolfram alpha is 69.1.

A quote that caught my eye from one of the obituaries:

“Bud started his day, whenever he was able, with a visit to Biscuitville. On days when he was not able to go inside, he would use the drive-through. As soon as they heard his voice, they would say “We have your order, Mr. Bud.”

Brief review: The Smiten Kitchen Cookbook by Deb Perelman

The Smitten Kitchen Cookbook by Deb Perelman

contains some excellent recipes. No shortcuts on ingredients but an emphasis on quality. Two recipes we’ve tried are Almond Date Breakfast Bars and Butternut Squash and Caramelized Onion Galette. The latter includes a great recipe for the crust.
