Cooking dictionaries & terms

Peach blossoms, garden at home, Falmouth, VAHere are two dictionaries dealing  with cooking terms. I’ve found them both useful when I come across a new term in a recipe, or a descriptive term that I want to get right.

Augusta Heritage Center

Blood root flowers, garden at home, Falmouth, VAWe’ve visited the Augusta Heritage Festival held at Davis and Elkins College, Elkins WV, at least once, and we’ve heard a good deal about it from some of the musicians in Fredericksburg. Lynn’ alma mater is D&E and so its been appealing to think about going to the festival for a week.

Sauerkraut and Country Spare Ribs

Blood root flowers, garden at home, Falmouth, VAAfter many years we are blessed with a very good butcher in Fredericksburg, Olde Towne Butcher. This recipe doesn’t come from them, but the ribs do. as they can, they supply grass fed and/or local meat. They’re friendly, knowledgeable, and helpful

Rosetta Code and Prolog sites

Blood root flowers, garden at home, Falmouth, VAIn the final third of the course Organization of Programming Languages, CPSC 401, we discuss Prolog so that students have the opportunity to think about and work with a logic programming-type language. In looking for links for Prolog and comparative ways of programming I came across Rosetta Code, a site that shows implementations of various algorithms in several languages. See my Delicious links tagged Prolog for other resources.

  • Rosetta Code is a programming chrestomathy site. The idea is to present solutions to the same task in as many different languages as possible, to demonstrate how languages are similar and different, and to aid a person with a grounding in one approach to a problem in learning another. Rosetta Code currently has 391 tasks, and covers 249 languages, though we do not (and cannot) have solutions to every task in every language.

parking at National (DCA)

Baked artichokes. onions, lemons, & olives, table at home, Falmouth, VAWe used this link to the live parking situation at Washington National Airport (DCA) when we were taking our trip to New Orleans last week. It was very helpful in deciding whether we would use the public lots or use a private service such as Airport Parking Reservations. That service was helpful when we traveled in December because it gives attractive rates for indoor parking at a hotel. It wouldn’t help us for this trip because the hotel shuttles stop around Midnight and our flight was scheduled for a landing just a few minutes before Midnight. The flight was delayed and didn’t land until about 2 AM !
